Practices of Jesus
What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? This powerful message challenges us to embrace the most counter-cultural practice of all: serving others. Drawing from Mark 10:45, we're reminded that Jesus himself came not to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. The King of the Universe didn't demand a throne; he took up a towel. In John 13, we witness Jesus washing his disciples' feet, performing the work of the lowest servant, and then telling us to do the same. This isn't just admirable teaching to appreciate from a distance. It's a direct call to action. The early Christians understood this so profoundly that during Roman plagues, when families abandoned their sick and dying, believers risked their own lives to care for the afflicted. Their radical love transformed communities and drew people to Christ. Today, we're invited into that same lifestyle. We're challenged to examine our schedules, identify who around us is carrying burdens, and ask ourselves: are we serving only when it's convenient or when we'll be noticed? True discipleship means looking for needs without waiting to be asked, serving in secret where only God sees, and sacrificing our time, energy, and comfort for others. This is how the world sees Jesus today—through us.
